For instance, if a theory defines a concept and then uses it another way, there may be a logical contradiction. If a theory’s concepts are vague or too ambiguous, it may be hard to understand how to use them to explain empirical data.

This analysis compares a theory to other theories and empirical data to determine how well it generalizes. Evaluation of a theory’s premises is a crucial component of outside criticism (Smith, 2019). The fundamental concepts or precepts that underlie a theory are known as its assumptions. For example, a theory’s external validity may be jeopardized if it assumes that every member of a specific population behaves uniformly. Any additional difficulty in determining a theory’s generalizability emerges if its underlying assumptions are either vaguely specified or poorly articulated. Conclusion Nursing theory is constantly evolving, so it is crucial to evaluate intermediate concepts. “Middle-range nursing” is a theory of nursing that aims to close the gap between research and practice.
