Commitment to one’s career in nursing is essential and has been considered to contribute to its professionalism.
Commitment ensures the polishing up of skulls. Due to the highly critical conditions and situations associated with the career, being committed ensures the nurse absorbs and adopts the right strain of nursing and relation skills. The career involves caring for patient’s health and treatment procedures ranging from minor cases to critical life-threatening circumstances. Commitment to professionalism in nursing contributes highly to the efficiency of the work done and the quality delivered. Due to its ability to make one highly qualified and be termed a professional nurse, commitment to the nursing career has been noted to contribute to nursing being considered a career.
The nursing career requires prioritizing the job rather than any other aspect of their life; just like a requirement in any professionalism, nursing demand that courtesy be paid to its calling at all times. It also dictates that one’s social life may be secondary to your patient’s needs. A professional course in any career is determined by its ability to demand more from the individuals involved than any other aspect in their life. This attribute is vital in considering nursing as a profession, hence commitment has unanimously contributed to nursing being referred to as a profession.
It encourages the person to act as a role model to others in the career and the patients he or she interacts with. Commitment requires maintaining a healthy routine such that their health status and hygiene be inspirational to others. The undisputable nature and ability of commitment to nursing in positioning and visualizing one as a father figure and role model to others in society out-rightly classifying nursing as a profession. This has seen commitment contribute highly to nursing being identified as a profession. Certification to become a qualified nurse involves several stages of studies and the acquisition of specified credentials, without which, no matter your level of knowledge, one cannot be acknowledged as a qualified nurse or get employment in a nursing and medical facility. The nursing industry requires one specific certificate and license from government-mandated bodies. Commitment to the career helps and enables one to keep their licenses current and certificates updated by engaging more in training programs and advancing nursing education. The nursing career and industry require that one exhibits a commitment to consistency in education to maintain a professional streak in their duties and be designated with more professional job positions. Professionalism is achieved through this commitment to increasing knowledge in nursing and staying up to date with the issues pertinent to the course. This affirms that commitment to the career contributes to identifying nursing as a profession.
Commitment to professional nursing and increasing and earning more educational credentials involves joining and committing to organizational membership. These membership programs advocate and provide for any new updates concerning the career and engage its members in training programs and association forums where nurses can interact and share their thoughts and guidelines on any new developments, improvements, or proposals. Through acquiring membership in a nursing forum or association, commitment to the profession ensures equipment of the right skills and the creation of a professional network of qualified nurses, building up your knowledge and career. According to Byszewski (2012), a nurse builds their credibility index through commitment, thus developing an outstanding reputation among workmates and peers. Meeting and interacting with peers and workmates, and sharing relevant important information, reminds one of a duty they are committed to and helps maintain professionalism and standard. Through the contribution of a strong level of commitment to nursing, therefore, it is identified as a professional career.
A Long and disciplined education process
An extended education process incorporating discipline in the students contributes immensely to improving professionalism in nursing (Picciotto, 2011). The nursing career is one of the strict sections of the medical and healthcare industry. Over a long period through which an individual is involved in learning relevant content on the course, knowledge acquired can be considered and classified as priceless. This is because it is of merit and outright advantage to the student as a career and in their personal life. The nursing education system has been tailored to equip the prospective nurse with good communication skills aimed at promoting and improving the relationship between the nurse and their patients. These skills ensure that information about any illness or health problem is well understood to aid in the correct diagnosis, treatment, and an efficient and viable health care management plan. Good communication taught all along the process helps improve professionalism. The nurse is also expected to learn health care tips and management. The other purpose of the lengthy education process is to equip the medic with the right set of skills in the management of the health situation of a patient. The system and outline of the education materials id directed at ensuring every nursing student can instinctively make a good independent solution in emergencies or cases requiring fast thinking. This is a significant contribution to identifying nursing as a profession due to the complexity of mental independence required.
The long and disciplined nursing education process is also aimed at giving the nurse adequate experience that would prove to be beneficial on the actual job. During learning, with live examples, students are shown how to treat and handle a health problem and diagnose and treat ailments. The ability of a nurse care practitioner to handle situations with professionalism is boosted by the content and experience he or she acquired and absorbed from school (Oermann and Gaberson, 2013). The student is also expected to attend internship programs. These are programs, still while learning, that the student enrolls to gain practical knowledge and hand on experience on how to handle medical cases, depending on their specialization and department allocated. These programs often last from three to six months, and the student’s performance is highly scrutinized, rated, and marks awarded by both the supervisor at the company or facility and the teacher regarding the results and performance attained. The aspect of creating an opportunity to equip the learner with the necessary experience, by the attribute of a comprehensive education system, presents a contribution to nursing by identifying it as a profession that has to employ experience and perfection.
The education process also focuses on instilling discipline in nursing students throughout their careers. Discipline in nursing education can be defined as the injection of the virtues of obeying and adhering to a particular ethical code of conduct that allows for punishment, in whatever form, to rectify misbehavior or disobedience. As the students learn about content, practice, and experience, discipline while handling the situations and communicating with anyone in their educational career is encouraged and rated. The student’s ethical conduct and performance are measured as it focuses on and promotes discipline. Following of procedures and requirements of the students is a major determining factor in ensuring a disciplined nursing fraternity. A long learning process that inoculates the incorporation of discipline in its students presents a significant contributing factor to identifying nursing as a profession.
According to Jeffreys (2012), a sound education system is generally a significant boost to the prosperity of the nursing industry in ensuring that society receives professional health care and treatment. The skills and qualities meant to be taught to the students create an ample arena for nurturing experience and hence the ability of the nurse to foster their expertise to higher educational levels. This shows that a long, disciplined education and learning process contributes to nursing.

The attributes of a strong commitment and a long, disciplined learning process affirm the incorporation of these qualities and skills. Academic integrity quiz will be conducted in class in week 12 (23 May 2016). This is a multiple choice set of questions designed to assess you knowledge of academic integrity so that we can design further learning activities to help you develop knowledge and skills in this area. The same quiz will be conducted at the end of the semester to assess how much you have learnt.
There are Maths and Drug Calculations Test in Week 9/10 that all students must complete to 100%, so you are expected to do as much practice as you can beforehand. We will be providing some guidance in the lecture time to help you with this as well. Any students who do not achieve this will be given another opportunity to do so after this.
