NSG6440 Adolescent Annual Exam Case Study: Annual physical health examinations are crucial at all stages of life, and most importantly in teenage due to the rapid body changes at this stage. Based on the provided case study, this discussion presents the various aspects that would be included in an adolescent’s annual exam visit, health promotion, and screening tools. The case study involves a 14-year-old male patient brought by his mother to the clinic for an annual exam visit. The mother is concerned about his declining school performance and the recent company of friends with whom his son hangs out.
The American College of Preventive Medicine (n.d.) has developed guidelines on adolescent wellness exams. The guidelines recommend that annual adolescent exams include a comprehensive physical assessment that includes the patient’s blood pressure, height, and weight for BMI, gynecomastia, and genitalia, including sexual maturity, structural abnormalities, and any sexually transmitted infection (ACMP, n.d.). Additionally, it is essential to assess the patient’s overall physical health and address any concerns the parent and the patient have concerning the patient’s health. Lee and Bong (2022) note that adolescents require privacy during physical exams. Therefore, the parent should not be present in the examination room. However, the parent’s concerns about the adolescent’s health are considered.
According to McCarty et al. (2022), adolescent screening is the best health promotion opportunity for the population. One of the health promotion topics I would focus on with this patient is the prevention of risky health behaviors. At this age, an adolescent is beginning to explore life and may indulge in behaviors that may put their health at risk, including sexual activity and drug and substance use. The idea is specifically essential for this patient since the mother raised a concern about lousy company, which may influence the adolescent to these behaviors. Some screening tools that can be used in this situation include blood and urine tests to screen for suspected drug use.
Every adolescent should be encouraged to go for annual physical exams. These exams help the patient and the parent know the adolescent’s developmental progress, identify anomalies, and plan action. Annual exams should include the physical examination part and the health promotion part. Health concerns raised by the parent and adolescents should also be addressed.
