Topic 1 DQ 2: The idea of servant leadership may be considered a paradox. Describe this paradox in the context of leadership. How does servant leadership align with the values of Christianity? Consider Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV), “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your interests but each of you to the interests of others.”The words ‘servant’ and ‘leadership’ have opposite meanings, so when they are brought together, they have a paradox (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). Servant leadership can be viewed as a paradox because leaders have personal agendas. It can be assumed that servant leaders do good deeds with the expectation of receiving something in return. It seems rare that people would do something for others without expecting something from others. True servant leader wants to better their followers by meeting their needs without wanting to acquire power, wealth, or fame. The verse Philippians 2:3-4 is a great example of how servant leadership aligns with the values of Christianity. The verse mentions doing nothing with selfish ambition and looking out for the interests of others, which aligns with the goals of servant leaders. Servant leaders care about the needs of others and want to see their followers exceed and reach their goals. ReferencesDierendonck, D. V., & Patterson, K. (Eds.). (2010).

What principle from the video can you apply in your leadership situations? Provide examples to support your rationale. I learned a lot more about servant leadership after viewing this video. I now know that there are four tenants of servant leadership. A true servant leader puts the needs of others before themselves. The four tenants of servant leadership are service to others, a holistic approach to work, promoting a sense of community, and sharing power in decision-making.

According to Roller (2015), an important principle of servant leadership is when a person starts as a servant that hopes to become a leader. This is important because if servant leader starts at the bottom and works their way up, they will be able to be a better leader by listening and empathizing with their followers. This is a principle I would apply in my leadership positions because I think it is important to be able to put yourself in other shoes. You are only as strong as your weakest link is a saying that can be applied to servant leadership because a true servant leader wants to uplift and help every follower that may be struggling.
